Meta Back Story
Meta began as a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 after some of its developers left Fossil watches to focus on their brand new smartwatch line. It received more than $300,000 on the crowd funding site and soon released its first series of smartwatches.
All the way back in 2004, many of the members of the MetaWatch team were actually working on developing a smartwatch for the well-known fashion watch brand Fossil. It was there that the idea of a fully-functioning smart watch was expanded to be an all-encapsulating piece of wearable technology. Not only would this watch give its wearer connection to phone calls and texts, but emails, social media posts, weather updates and sports scores as well. So after the team created the Fossil smartwatch that the brand had requested, MetaWatch branched off into developing its own specific timepiece.
The first MetaWatch smartwatches were released as beta models in limited fashion in 2011, complete the with necessary cords and clips for charging, updating and software debugging. Soon after the release of the first generation Meta watches, the second generation was launched with more of a streamlined and efficient software system. Supporting both Android and iOS, Meta placed its campaign on Kickstarter in August of 2012 asking for pledges to help launch the brand in wide release. More than $300,000 was given by nearly 2,000 backers, and the project became fully funded in less than a month.
Who Would Wear a Meta Watch
As with nearly any piece of wearable tech, Meta watches are designed and marketed towards the millennial generation that requires constant connectivity to the rest of the world in both the social and professional sense of the term. Yet the brand is not limited to just that sect of the population. Gen-X and Gen-Y-ers are also wearing these watches by the thousands as well. Because of the various styles that each Meta watch comes in, there is an option for even the most finicky of wearer.
